About

Now entering its third year, the Stifel Nicolaus Edwardsville Rotary Criterium on Saturday, August 18, promises to be bigger and better in 2012, than ever before.

Moving from a Sunday afternoon to a Saturday night and bringing the Criterium Concert from City Park to the race itself will create a high-energy atmosphere for families and spectators of all ages. In addition to the eight high-speed pro bike races and the four Free Kids Races, this year Rotary is also partnering with the Edwardsville Junior Service Club to host a Pub Crawl featuring Downtown Edwardsville’s unique dining destinations.
The Stifel Nicolaus Edwardsville Rotary Criterium is produced by the Edwardsville Rotary Club as a community-wide event and fundraising program.

What is a Criterium?

A criterium, or ‘crit’, is a bicycle race held on a short course (usually between 0.5 and 2.0 miles in length) and often run on streets in the heart of a city center. Race Length is determined by total time or number of laps.
A criterium’s duration is shorter than that of a traditional road race and the average speed and intensity of a Criterium are appreciably higher. The winner is the first rider to cross the finish line without having been “lapped.”
Criteriums also offer smaller cash prizes (called primes, pronounced “preems”) for winning specific laps. Criteriums are the most common type of bicycle racing in the continental United States.

Criterium Sanctioning

The Edwardsville Rotary Criterium will be sanctioned by two professional sanctioning bodies, USA Cycling (USAC) and the Missouri Bicycle Racing Association.

National Sanctioning:

The race will be a USA Cycling Event. USA Cycling is a family of organizations that promotes and governs different disciplines of the sport, and that work as one to build the sport of bicycle racing, assist with athlete development and sustain international competitive excellence. For more information, please visit www.usacycling.org.

Regional Sanctioning:

The Missouri Bicycle Racing Association (MOBRA) is the regional arm of USA Cycling. MOBRA provides all of the necessary components for a USA Cycling event such as officials, timers, and the regional calendar. Obtaining a date on the MOBRA calendar is critical to the success of any professional bicycle race. The Edwardsville Rotary Criterium has secured the September 12 date on the MOBRA calendar.
